Public speaking

Minutes:

Bill McDermott, Chair of Budleigh Salterton Trust reported that the project to purchase Budleigh Salterton  Fire Station needed additional funding. When they knew that the fire station would become available they tried to purchase it on behalf of the community. The building would be going to auction with a guide price of £120,000. But there had been considerable interest shown in it and it was likely to achieve a much higher figure.

£200 000 had already been raised and £25,000 pledged from Budleigh Salterton Town Council towards refitting the building; but this might not be enough. They were hoping to acquire the Fire Station for the benefit of the community as a centre for community activities. A large number of people were behind the project and the Trust were seeking grant of £10,000 towards the purchase of the Fire Station for the community benefit.

Mike Ferguson, Member of Coleridge Memorial Trust reported that they were seeking funding towards a life sized bronze statue of Samuel Taylor Coleridge at St Marys Church in Ottery St Mary. It was an important memorial for one of England’s most important romantic poets. The statue would help remind and educate people on his legacy.
